Jenny Chamarette – status anxiety or missing the pictures: film performativity in the museum space.
Jenny explored the idea of the film medium as a museum ‘object’. Suggesting that film’s indeterminate status provokes acute anxiety or “Object status anxiety” within the museum field.
How does film attain the status of a museum object?
Implied subject of film and the object – time dependant, ephemeral and inconsistent medium. Films indeterminacy contests its position of objectness and subjectness.
Jenny then went on to discus the performative elasticity of film’s object status, even in the case of ‘obsolete’ or ‘failed’ film, within a case study of contemporary art museum spaces in metropolitan France.
something to consider is Object culture – bill brown – Thing theory and objects others and us – the hyper presence of objects.
Jenny also discussed the tenacity of object status. Suggesting that objects no longer have value in their own right? Do objects fail to tell the whole story? The notion of the failed exhibit? Can this be used to entry point for discussion? Does all of these questions suggest that all objects are having status anxiety? Not just film?
